Parma, April 14, 2026Environmental Crimes, Mafias, and Waste: A Multidisciplinary Perspective is the title of the meeting scheduled for Monday, April 27 at 9:30 a.m. in the Aula dei Filosofi (Via Università 12).

Organized by the Centre for Studies in European and International Affairs (CSEIA) within the framework of its collaboration with the University’s Permanent Observatory on Legality, the event aims to provide an in-depth and interdisciplinary analysis of the relationship between environmental crime, mafia organizations, and the illegal management of the waste cycle, bringing into dialogue sociological, historical, and criminal-law perspectives. The discussion will focus on the economic and political factors that have fueled the spread of these phenomena, highlighting the connections between criminal networks and the legal economy.

Special attention will be devoted to the consequences of these illicit activities, which affect the environment, public health, local communities, and the relationship of trust between citizens and institutions. The analysis will be enriched by references to emblematic cases in recent Italian history, from the “toxic waste ships” (Navi dei veleni) to the Terra dei Fuochi, as well as more recent dynamics that have emerged in the Lombardy region.

Speakers will include Thomas Aureliani (University of Milan), Andrea Carnì (University of Milan), and Demetrio Villani (University of Rome Tor Vergata). The public event will be introduced by Emanuele Castelli, Delegate of the Rector for Social Justice and Director of CSEIA, and chaired by Laura Pineschi, Professor of International Law.
